Athletics

Queen of Heaven’s Sports Program offers a variety of sports for boys and girls from first through eighth grade.  Our sports program focuses on building confidence and teaching not only athletic skills, but also life skills such as sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, building character and learning how to win with class and lose with grace.  Participation in the sports program enables each student to enjoy the entire Queen of Heaven experience.

Grades 4-6 Boys

Varsity Baseball

Varsity Baseball is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys.  Sixth graders can participate only with written permission from the Principal and Athletic Director.

The league has more traditional baseball rules and plays on 90’ diamonds. The regular season consists of 8 – 10 games, plus league playoffs and Diocesan playoffs. The season usually starts in September (or with the St. Francis tournament in mid- August). Playoffs can last until the end of October.

Junior Varsity Baseball

JV Baseball is generally a league for 5th and 6th graders. (We have occasionally included 4th graders in an effort to field a team and allow our 4th graders to experience baseball at a higher level.)  Practice begins in mid-August, with games starting in early September.  Playoffs run from the beginning of October to late October.

The regular season generally consists of games two days per week starting at 4:30 PM (due to darkness restrictions). Keep in mind that if there are rainouts, games may be more frequent than 2 days per week to accommodate rescheduling. The season generally consists of 8 – 10 regular season games and playoffs (depending upon how the team does). Games are 6 innings. We play on a 60’ diamond and home games are played on the QOH diamond.

This league allows “modified” stealing and bunting.  The teams do not always bat the entire bench. It is possible for a player to play 3 innings in the field and not get any at-bats.  Please prepare you child for these possibilities so that they are not disappointed.  This league is a great way to transition our players from “little league” rules to more traditional baseball rules.

Co-ed basketball is available to all students in first through fourth grades.  Varsity and JV teams are not co-ed, but boys and girls play on the same teams at the younger age levels.

Queen of Heaven’s first through fourth grade co-ed teams participate in the Father Schaus League, which takes place during the Winter Sports season.  The league’s games begin in mid-November and end in early March.  Games are played on Saturdays.  Practice schedules are determined by each team’s coach, but can be held on weekdays (either right after school or in the evenings) or weekends.

There is a cutoff date for submitting Permission Forms, especially for basketball players, which was instituted several years ago because of the late number of signups in previous years.  The School needs to know how many players are interested, so we can assign teams, identify coaches, have enough uniforms ready for all players and register with the different leagues.  If your permission form is received after the cutoff date, your child will be put on a waiting list and will only be added to a team if there is room.

Boys basketball is available for boys in grades 5 through 8.  Basketball is played in the Winter Sports Season, which usually begins in October and ends mid-March.

The JV boys’ teams participate in the Father Schaus league, which starts in November and ends in March. The team is comprised of 5th and 6th graders. The JV league consists of 8-10 games, generally on Saturdays. Practices can be one or two days per week at the coach’s discretion. There is a playoff tournament at the end of the season. Parental volunteers for scoreboard operation at home games is requested.

The Varsity boys participate in a Diocesan basketball league starts in November and ends in March. This league has 10 – 12 league games and playoffs.  Practices can be 2 – 3 time per week at the coaches
discretion.  The varsity boys may also participate in many tournaments throughout the year. We enourage teams to participate in as many High School-sponsored tournaments as possible so that the boys can visit the many Catholic High Schools (including Timon, Canisius, St. Mary’s and St. Francis).  The team is
eligible to qualify for the Diocesan playoff tournament if they finish high enough in the standings.  Parental volunteers for scoreboard operation at home games is requested.

The JV girls’ teams participate in a Southtowns league that usually starts in November and ends in March. JV teams are made up of 4th, 5th and 6th graders. The season consists of 10 – 12 regular season games, plus playoffs.  Practices are generally twice per week at the coach’s discretion. There are several tournament opportunities available at the coach’s discretion. Parental volunteers for scoreboard operation at home games is requested.  Depending on the league that the JV team enters, JV games might consist of a full game where the more experienced 5th graders and 6th graders from both teams play against each other.  A separate game might be played involving both team’s 4th graders and the
less-experienced 5th graders (JJV).  Such games are generally played back-to-back at the same venue.

The Varsity girls’ team(s) participate in a Diocesan basketball league that starts in November and ends in March.  This league includes 10 – 12 league games and playoffs.  Practices can be 2 – 3 time per week at the
coach’s discretion.  The varsity girls may also participate in tournaments throughout the year.  QOH encourages teams to participate in as many High School-sponsored tournaments as possible so that the girls can visit many aread Catholic High Schools.  The team is eligible to qualify for the Diocesan playoff tournament if they finish high enough in the standings.  Parental volunteers for scoreboard operation at home games is requested.

Grades 4-6 Girls

Varsity Softball is generally for 7th and 8th graders (and 6th graders in some cases).  JV Softball is generally for 4th, 5th and 6th graders.

The season runs from late April to early June (weather permitting).  All practices and some games are held at the QOH diamond behind the school.  The number of games depends on the number of teams in the league, but has been usually about 8-10 regular season games and then playoffs.  Volunteers are also needed to maintain and groom the diamond on a weekly (or more frequent) basis.  This is an independent league that is run entirely by the coaches and schools within it.

1) Please send the Permission Form and a $25 check in an envelope marked “Spring Sports Registration Fee” to the school office.  Roster spots cannot be guaranteed if you do not sign up by the end of this school year.

Please also send to the school office a $25 check marked as “Refundable Uniform Deposit.”  This deposit will be returned upon receipt of the uniform at the end of the season.

2) Valid Sports Medical Physical Form must also be on file with the School Nurse. If you do not have a valid Sports Physical Form call your child’s Doctor. If your child’s medical form at the school is NOT valid you will be notified. The Medical Sports Physical Form is good for 1 year. If it valid the first day of that sport’s practice it will be considered valid for that sport’s season.

Both forms must be turned into the School Office before any player can practice.

Girls Volleyball is a Fall Sport, and the season lasts from late-August to early-November.  Girls Volleyball is available to students in grades 4 through 8.

Boys Volleyball is a Spring Sport, and its season lasts from early March to mid-May.  Boys Volleyball is available to students in grades 4 through 8.

Varsity Volleyball – Queen of Heaven participates in a Diocesan varsity volleyball leagues for Boys and Girls.  For the Girls, the league’s matches begin in early September and end in early November.  For the Boys, the league begins in March and games end in May.

The seasons typically consist of 12 – 14 matches that could take place on any day of the week or weekend.  Most of the matches might include “double headers” against another school.  Generally, half of the matches will be at home (in the QOH Gym) and half will be on the road, depending upon gym availability. The matches are best of three games with rally scoring. If the team does well, there is a Diocesan playoff tournament that takes place at the end of the regular season.  Parental volunteers for scoreboard operation at home games and line judging at ALL games is requested.

Sixth graders are eligible to play Varsity Volleyball (both Boys and Girls), but written consent from the Principal and Athletic Director is required.  Fifth graders are not eligible to play on a Varsity Volleyball team.

JV Volleyball – QOH’s JV Volleyball teams are comprised of 4th, 5th and 6th graders.  The JV teams participate in a very informal league designed to teach the game to younger athletes.  The regular season consists of 8 – 10 matches with no playoffs.  The coaches in this league determine the dates, times and location of the games.  The Girls JV season lasts from August through October.  The Boys JV season lasts from March through May.  Home games are played in the QOH gym.  JV Volleyball is a great introduction to the game and helps prepare the athletes for varsity.

Soccer is available to all students in grades 1 through 8.  Soccer is a co-ed sport, with boys and girls playing on the same team at all age levels.

Queen of Heaven participates in the Father Baker Soccer League, which takes place during the Fall Sports season.  The league’s games begin in early September, usually the first or second weekend of school.  The league games end at the end of October.  Games are played once per week, usually on either Saturday or Sunday afternoons.  Practice schedules are determined by each team’s coach, but are usually held on weekdays (either right after school or in the evenings).  Practices are held at one of the two soccer fields behind Queen of Heaven School.

Rosters for all QOH soccer teams are generally finalized in mid-August so that teams can begin practicing before school begins in order to be ready for league games.

The Father Baker Soccer League is split into 4 age groups: 1st-2nd graders (Mites), 3rd-4th graders (Peewee), 5th-6th graders (JV) and 7th-8th graders (Varsity).

The Queen of Heaven Swim team is part of the Neumann Catholic Swim League and allows students in Kindergarten through 8th grade to compete.

The season runs from the first week of school through the beginning of November.  All practices are held at the West Seneca East Middle School. Our meets are held at various high schools and colleges within the area.  There are typically six meets and a final championship meet. Parents are needed to help with various things throughout the season.

Cross Country is a great complement to many other sports such as soccer, basketball or track.  This sport is an excellent introduction to long distance running, and athletes from all sports participate to help keep in shape during their “off seasons.”

Track is a different sport from cross-country.  Track is a Spring sport and is open to students in Grades 3rd – 8th (some 2nd graders may participate – please see permission slip for details).  This is also a co-ed sport.
